Do you know that people in Europe spend more than three times on flowersthan in the USA?

Today, I want to share some unique information found from the FlowerCouncil of Holland – 8 SECRETS TO SUCCESSFUL FLOWER SALES – THE EUROPEAN WAY (with Mandy Majerik commentary, of course!)

1) Make anattractive PRESENTATION outside. You only have one chance to make a firstimpression – make it a good one! Prop an old bicycle outside with a basket offresh blooms or place some large planters or door wreaths to attract attention!

2) If youare a flower shop, then SHOW YOUR FLOWERS! If you want to keep your flowers inrefrigeration for longevity, be sure to have a few buckets at your counter toshow off new varieties or simply to let your client – stop and smell the roses.

3) GROUPflowers by color, shape and price. Always be sure to have an offering to allyour clients – whatever price point they are searching for – make every clientfeel just as important as the last.

4) Dressyour window for WOW stopping impact. Dare to be original, but keep it simple!In this instance, Less=More. Have one eye catching display that passer-bys can“read” in an instant.

5) Createyour OWN STYLE. If we were all the same – the world would be boring! It’s notalways about being better, it’s about being different! Set yourself apart fromeveryone else. Tell your story and share your passion – sell YOU and YOURSTYLE!

6) ENTERTAINthe FUN SHOPPER & be ready for the RUN SHOPPER. Create a floral experience. Have a bouquet wrapped and readyfor that run shopper and create the bouquets out in the middle of the store forthat fun shopper! Entertain your clients by sharing your fun floral journey andsome of your latest experiences – they will love to hear about you.

7) Create adifferent atmosphere WITH LIGHT. Proper lighting is very important for yourstore image! Add lighting strips and halogen spots to draw attention to specialproducts. Think of your FLOWERS AS ART and show them off! Give them thespotlight they deserve!

8) TRY NEWFLOWERS EVERY WEEK! This is my favorite! Give you and your client something totalk about! Experiment with colors, shapes, sizes and scents! Always keep yourblooms fresh and interesting – you never know when you will fall in love withyour new favorite!

Along my journey of decisions, highs & lows, and chances & risks, I have found one floral common denominator - Mr. J Schwanke. I first met J at a Southern Retail convention, let me rephrase, I was first inspired by J at a Southern Retail convention and well, the rest is all about the journey that has brought us this far...
If you have ever had the opportunity to meet Mr. J Schwanke, you understand just what the definition of charisma is. If you've ever had the pleasure of having dinner with Mr. J Schwanke, you understand just what a real, down to earth friend he can be. If you've ever had the opportunity to share the camera with him, you understand just what it feels like to work with a professional with incredible passion for this industry.

Behind the Video - Behind the Mayesh Design Star

Last week, I found myself boarding a plane headed to sunny, Los Angeles, California - one week before Christmas.
I was anxious.
I was nervous.
I was exhilarated.
I was beginning my journey as the 2012 Mayesh Design Star.

I wasn't sure what the first taping experience would be like, but I knew that I had Mr. Wes Wages on the other side of that video camera.

It means the world to have another talented artist being creative in their element and making sure you make the most perfect splash in the pool. Not to mention, having Tera Wages by my side (and his) for style advice, mental recap and a sense a calm. She is the prettiest mic boom girl, I have ever seen!

I was greeted at Mayesh Wholesale Florist by so many smiling faces, wonderful hugs and such a warm welcome by everyone from the sales team to the guys who drive the trucks and pack the boxes.

I was able to get a quick tour of the LA Flower Market and begin to really finalize the details of what awesome blossoms I would be using and what design I wanted to show the world. With that kind of floral selection at my fingertips - it was hard to make a decision! I wanted to share it ALL with YOU!

I sat down to a Q&A lunch with the Sales Team to really listen how they worked - and worked together. THAT was one of the most impressive qualities about the Mayesh Team - that they are just that - a TEAM. They had ordered lunch in for the whole staff and as we sat chatting over beautiful centerpieces - with gorgeous floral selection - I realized that they were just as excited as I was. I knew in that moment that I had to deliver videos that would ultimately inspire their customers to buy product and inspire them even more to sell, sell, sell these beautiful awesome blossoms.

The last day, I was able to spend most of it with Pat - the CEO of Mayesh. He was so warm and welcoming by sharing his story with us over lunch and even sharing his lovely family and family home. I left with great respect for him and his whole family - which it takes each one to pull off this floral powerhouse running like a well-oiled machine.

Special Thanks to Cindie for her constant attention to any detail we needed and to my girl Laura London (my sales rep - and the best succulent ornament maker in CA - I'm sure of it!) for taking care of us during our stay.

What does this mean for us in the floral world?!?

For me, it gives me a 'reason' to keep using my orange, monarch butterflies, in my arrangements and my design shows. I just love them and now, I have one more reason to share them ;)

For you, it means that we will see an emergence of new accessories, containers and accents in this color. CORNHOLE - THE "HOTTEST" WEDDING GAME!

I am not sure about the rest of us, but the best of us, apparently have discovered that the "hottest" game this year at weddings is CORNHOLE! I mean, it's even been seen on ESPN and MODERN FAMILY & in BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA!
I have been paying attention and noticed that over half of my spring, summer and fall weddings have incorporated this game as a special treat for guests! With the emergence of details, details, details being on the tips of the lips of my brides, this game offers them yet another opportunity to use their colors, monogram, logo, etc. to reinforce their theme!

Here are just a few pictures from some of my favorites of my brides as well as some inspirational shots from pinterest!

2012 MAYESH DESIGN STAR!

It is 5:30 am in Birmingham, Alabama and I just received a phone call to let me know that Mayesh Wholesale Florist had announced their 2012 spokesperson - the MAYESH DESIGN STAR....is MANDY MAJERIK!!!
I rolled over from my deep sleep (if you know me, you know I am NOT a morning person ;) to hear the voice say..."MANDY....YOU DID IT!" and the truth is there are so many people to thank behind the scenes - I was just the one in front of the camera.
I want to THANK EACH & EVERY ONE OF YOU - those of you who voted, who re-posted on their wall, who called their friends and family to rally the votes. I absolutely could not have done this without YOU! NOW, call them and let them know I WON!!!

SPECIAL THANKS go out to Wes and Tera Wages of ARMOSA STUDIOS - who were up for this crazy idea I had of filming this video. Wes, you took my vision and created the winning entry. I am SO THANKFUL to both of you for your support and sharing your talent and love with the rest of the world. I absolutely could not have done this without YOU!

WHAT IS PINTEREST TO MANDY MAJERIK? YOU ASK....
Others often ask me what inspired me? Well, PINTEREST is a really cool way to get inspired. You can search based upon what you are looking for... for instance: shadow puppets or wedding reception decor. I have so many brides and planners that are creating PINTEREST boards for their weddings. Pinning pictures of bouquets and decorations and even clothing! I can go view their board anytime and get the vibe/feel they want their event to have! Sometimes, we even look at the boards during a consultation! Of course, in return, they can see mine and see what my personal style is. The key is the categories or Boards that you create to organize your pins.

Here is the screenshot of my PINTEREST account...I would love to spend the afternoon adding more pins, drinking a cup of hot chocolate with Jasper (my cocker spaniel) at my feet! Believe me, my friends, it is ADDICTIVE!

TENNESSEE STATE FLORISTS ASSOCIATION

Last week I had the privilege of being a presenter among one of the most star-studded, action-packed State Conventions I have ever attended!

Tennessee State Florists Association presented a Convention that was full of quality content – everything from the panel of presenters, wonderful trade fair vendors to the phenomenal President’s Gala décor by Kevin Coble, AIFD and his team of volunteers!

I was honored to be approached to be among the prestigious line-up of presenters including all the letters of the alphabet – AIFD, PFCI, AAF, TMF, etc. etc. –
J Schwanke, Brita Edlbauer, Bert Ford, Ann Jordan, Larry Kramer, Tom Bowling, just to name a few! Every program was a different theme with a unique twist with each designer’s style!

Weddings: Expect the Unexpected was my topic to address and as I stood on stage, I wanted to make the connection that we all have to be inspired in order to inspire others. We must all be attractive to our brides – being our brand – selling our brand – and delivering a product we are proud to have our name on. LIVE IT.LIVE YOUR BRAND.

*Remember: It might be our 1 wedding of 50 for the year, but this wedding day is their 1 in 50 years! *

I don’t like using notecards during my presentations, but you never know what trick I might have up my sleeve!
I wrote a little reminder (in Sharpie) of the complete definition of INSPIRATION on my arm. Remember – Expect the Unexpected!

I am inspired by so many things…
Music – Artwork – an Individual – a Brand – a Quote – a Carpet Pattern – Orange Butterflies! Ha! Among many, many other countless, ordinary things that I see in my Messy Thrilling Life!

I enjoyed my time in Tennessee with my fellow floral friends – my mother and her friend were able to travel to my show this time which made it extra special, one of my mentors, J Schwanke was giving me a positive smile in the crowd, my friend Kevin Coble was running around, and was my date to the President’s Dinner (he was the incoming President that night – how lucky was I?!?) – and of course, I couldn’t write this blog without thanking my right hand assistant for the weekend, glass cleaner, prep girl, uglu manager, butterfly keeper, wonderful designer, Jessica Morris.

After the Convention was over and as I drove home from Franklin to Birmingham, I collected my thoughts from the weekend – the positive compliments everyone shared with me after my show – and all I can get from that is simply all of YOU inspire me. We are all a small part of the industry, but when you get us together, what a beautiful sight to behold – all of us blossoming together.

MY COUSIN, MY BEAUTIFUL BRIDE!

I always grow to know and love my brides before their wedding day, but there is something to be said when one of your own is getting married! My beautiful cousin AMY called me one day out of the blue to tell me she was GETTING MARRIED! I was so happy for her - as I made a house call to discuss her flowers, she popped the question to me of being her MAID OF HONOR! Of course I was delighted and was honored to not only create her flowers but also to stand proudly beside her and witness her vows of love to one lucky, lucky guy!

As my Aunt Patsy assisted in the planning - there was a phenomenal bridesmaid luncheon for all of us - including our special totes! What a great idea for bridesmaids and then after the wedding, we can have a great waterproof carry-all!

Of course the black and white theme developed and well, I knew that there was going to be hydrangeas, and manzanita and crystal dangles involved - Selma, AL would never be the same after the HOTHOUSE van pulled into the city ;)

My other cousin Erica - is a beautiful woman with a beautiful eye behind the camera! She captured all of these images of Amy and Jason! There is talent in Texas - and she came to share it with us this special day in Selma! Visit her website at Emily Fischer.

Here is a beautiful ring image...LOVE this Erica!

I wanted to create something simple for the bouquets including lots of texture and fragrance.
Amy carried a biedermeier style bouquet of white hypericum berries and a large collar of fragrant freesia.

All of the bridesmaids carried a clutch of freesia with a whimsical accent of lily grass. Of course, I had to tie in the black and white theme with the ribbon treatment - we had to match her shoes!

We had to make sure that the detail on the cake matched the bridesmaid's ribbon! All those details have to be pulled together!

All EIGHT - yes, I said EIGHT - of the flower girls wore halos of sweet babies breath and tossed petals on the aisle to announce Amy's arrival!

Here is one of them catching a butterfly! Amy and Jason added a special touch to their ceremony by including a butterfly release! It was one of the most unique ideas to incorporate all of the guests I have seen - especially to bless this new couple!

Special Thanks to everyone involved in making this day an unforgettable memory and a SPECIAL THANKS to my cousin AMY who I have known and loved ever since our NKOTB and REBA days - yes, I said it - our innocent days ;) Although, there might still be videos around...ha!

And to my new cousin JASON - you are one lucky man! She is not only a beautiful bride on the outside but the most beautiful on the inside!

JDUNCAN - ON LOCATION IN ALABAMA!

There are a few individuals that walk this Earth that you can’t help but notice. Jodi Duncan or “JDuncan” as I like to call her, will grab your attention and make you take a second look with her fun, whimsical blonde curls. Once she opens her southern Illinois sweet sounding voice, you can’t help but want to sit and chat and learn from her. Believe me, you can always learn from her! Whenever I saw this image the first time on her FB page, I knew we had to be friends. Anyone who could fill a Woody up with flowers - is my kind of girl!

After a few AIFD Symposiums, a 14 hour road trip, a Philadelphia Flower Show team experience and hundreds of conversations, tweets, & FB messages, I have come to call her my friend and value our great, great friendship.

I know she eats cookies in bed, I know she lets her hair down every once and a while and that she can rock the social media world with a touch of a button. (I guess now, you do too ;)

Thanks to FLORA magazine for capturing this shot of us in Michigan! We had a "Boondocks" blast - and that is an understatement.

She recently came to Birmingham to visit when I called her in as my right hand on my busiest wedding weekend of the year! (Wedding Weekend will be a whole blog in itself!) She was a trooper all week – we worked, we laughed – we laughed ‘til we cried!

Always a laugh when JDuncan is around! ;)

From the smallest of details to the grand scheme, Jodi carried on with my notes and sketches as if they were her own and of course made me some new ones ;) I always wish if only I could clone myself…..hmmm….I got a little taste-test of that last weekend – and I LOVED it!

Beautiful Bride. Beautiful Flowers. Beautiful Wedding.

I have never met a mother and daughter more charismatic and caring than Carlee & her mother, Lynne Means.

From the moment we met I knew that this was going to be a memorable, noteworthy, detail-oriented, joyous celebration of love. Love of the bride and groom and love of their family and friends!
I mean just look at this love between Carlee and her parents! I can see where she gets her beautiful smile and magnetic personality!

Meghan Cease of MElizabeth Weddings & Events, made a great match when she recommended that the Means meet Majerik. I can’t say much more than I loved these ladies from the moment we began discussing a color scheme to the moment I saw these pictures of them having a ball at the reception!

I am very thankful for the opportunity they gave me to be creative and recommend different ideas to make this wedding one of a kind! There are so many, many, many wonderful photographs captured by Tera & Wes Wages of Armosa Studios to share! Whenever Carlee mentioned that they were her photographers – I was smirking with excitement. They love each other – and it shows in every wedding they shoot.

I always love to get photographs of the bride and groom to tell the story. I find myself picking photographs that don’t even have flowers in them!!! From shoes to invitations to linens – every detail supports the story.

Bouquets:
Carlee carried a very luscious, textural bouquet of kale, green trick dianthus, hypericum berry, lime green hydrangeas, and viburnum.

Bridesmaids carried varying bouquets of dutch, peach tulips and Juliet garden roses.

For an added bit of texture all the bouquets were wrapped with eyelash yarn.
After the wedding, Carlee chose to accent her hair for the reception with this floral pick! I have seen this with many brides - a great trend!

Buttonholes:
The guys wore spray roses and hypericum berries with the same eyelash accent..

Ceremony:
The wooden front doors of the church were the backdrop for our infamous hydrangea squares. Carlee had such great graphic designs that we included one of her personal monograms into this display.

The sign-in, entry table made a statement by welcoming guests with a centerpiece of a tall moss cross in a bed of luscious, textural floral. A magnificent collection for all floral lovers! Everyone commented on the kale here! Hothouse loves to give people something to talk about!

The altar was adorned with a collection of painted, old world pedestals accented with rose spheres, a collection of moss spheres and candles. I love it when we can use props to give great proportion to the room!

Reception:
The Club is always a fun, yet refined environment to have a reception. We were able to have a little fun here with an entrance coral benches accented with silk, apple green pillows and coffee tables customized with her wedding logo and designer fabric.

The floor plan was a fun one including long, rectangular tables featuring two styles of centerpieces. Our large candle lamps made a statement along with beautiful cymbidium orchids and hydrangea squares.

The cake was adorned with layers of coral and peach garden roses and textures of dianthus and berries. Thanks to Hothouse team member Tony for creating a floral masterpiece!

Finally, I can’t ever say too much about Armosa Studios. They captured such fun shots of the wedding party and guests in this fun photo booth. Tera & Wes share and show their love with every couple the meet.

I know every bride wants her wedding to be this much fun! Tera creating and capturing it at the same time ;) (That is Wes with the stylish socks ;)

I especially want to take a minute to thank Mrs. Lynne Means. She was such a fabulous mother to work with and always went the extra mile to make sure her daughter didn’t miss a thing! We covered all the details…now, she jokes that she is a member of the Mandy Majerik Fan Club!

THE POWER OF FUNERAL FLOWERS: HOTHOUSE STYLE

With a new generation of flower consumers, it seems that funeral sprays are becoming a memory of the past. It was our Grandmother's generation who grew up sending all those beautiful blooms to be seen and to be there to show support and comfort of family and friends. Although donations and memorials are becoming more and more popular, there is nothing that will replace the power of funeral flowers. Here is an example of how a simple funeral arrangement can make a monumental impact on someone.
To preface this letter, at Hothouse I love to design an alternative to the traditional floral spray by recommending grapevine wreaths. It is a new, trendy twist to show your support and sympathy. My clients, especially corporate clients, love to order them and love that their memorial piece stands out among the rest - it's different, it's detailed and it's designed!

A customer forwarded me this email she received after her business sent a grapevine arrangement to the funeral of a co-worker's family. We didn't discuss any details when the order was placed - I simply created a Hothouse sympathy design. Flowers do make an impression - just make sure yours are the ones that leave a positive, lasting impression!
I hope you feel the emotion behind this - I sure did.

It's quite ironic - I don't always take a photograph of my funeral arrangements, but I pulled out my iphone and got a quick snapshot of this arrangement not knowing a few days later I would receive this email.

Dear Friends:

I was the first to arrive at the funeral home yesterday. I entered the chapel quietly and spent nearly an hour alone with my father. It's a strange feeling, but a peaceful one, to have some time to speak to the earthly remains of a loved one.

The florist arrived and began bringing in the flowers. There were the usual carnation sprays, and some with roses. They were lovely, and we appreciate them so much.

The last spray the florist brought in was very, very unusual. It was three wreaths, two small and one large, arranged vertically. The flowers were unusual as well. Orchids, which are my mother's absolute favorite flower, were the focal point of the arrangement. There were red roses in the middle, my sister's favorite flower, and irises at the top, which are one of my favorite flowers. There was beautiful greenery and a lovely fern. Fern is my mother's first name.

The other arrangements, though beautiful, were fairly standard, and not very noteworhy; but, when I saw this one, I paused, awe struck, and wondered who had taken the time to send such a unique spray. When I opened the card, my eyes misted as I read your names.

Wow.

I picked up my phone to call my husband, but I changed my mind. He would be there soon with my girls, and I wanted him to see it before I told him who it was from.

When my mother arrived, she stood in front of it for a long time. She was so pleased. It is absolutely beautiful. Really.

After the funeral and the luncheon, my brothers and I went back to the cemetery to arrange the flowers on the grave. The other sprays were placed on the grave - the carnations and daisies looked lovely. But, I took the orchids and the wreaths back to my mother's house. She asked me to put it in his bedroom. The hospital bed and medical paraphernalia had been removed, and she didn't want to walk by his room and see its emptiness. Instead, she wanted to look in and see this beautiful arrangement.

Thank you for your kindness. It was deeply, deeply appreciated.

ROJAHN & MALANEY WHOLESALE DESIGN SHOW!

Last weekend I had the pleasure of getting to know on a personal and professional level, one of the "cadillacs" in the floral wholesale world.
I flew into Wisconsin to spend the weekend with the Rojahns and all of the great staff that work on a daily basis at Rojahn & Malaney wholesale in downtown Milwaukee. From the minute I landed, Tina Rojahn Elsafy greeted me and we stopped to grab a Starbucks even before we headed to baggage claim! At that moment, I knew this was going to be a great weekend ;)
Thursday afternoon I spent an hour perusing the aisles finding treasure after treasure. I felt like a kid in a candy store! Rojahn has so many great products and a full inventory of any hard good products a designer could dream of! I wanted to make sure I promoted several of the products from my sponsors - Design Master, Syndicate Sales and Esprit Miami!
I decided I would present a few of my favorite things - Rojahn style - and design a few sets of interest for the wedding afternoon segment.
The Rojahn Family catered to my every need and desire making sure their designer was taken care of! Tina, Rita and I dined at several very nice restaurants where I was able to share in a bit of the local fare. From chips n salsa to Real Chili to Moscow Mules, I was throughly taken care of! Thank you, Thank you Tina!

I spent Friday and Saturday prepping and designing several arrangements that would assist me in presenting my Wedding Show on Sunday!
Sunday morning's segment was my "Favorite Things" followed by a Social Media lunch and then the afternoon was action-packed with 4 sets of different themes. Everyone who came out to spend their Sunday with Rojahn & Malaney and myself, was able to take away several tips, trends and techniques in today's floral world that they could put to practical use in their business!

I decided to do four different themes including a Southern Style Wedding Inspiration! Peaches, Gardenias, Pussy Willow, etc.
They had to make sure they made me feel at home by getting me in some gardenias!

I also did a very organic, textural presentation that incorporated some very cool moss ribbon and containers!

I can't brag enough on how lucky Milwaukee's professionals are to have such an amazing source of product and inspiration in their city. If you know they company - you know the family. By the end of my journey, I felt as if after dining with them, working with them and sharing in their stories of special moments, I had developed a strong professional relationship but made great personal friendships as well.

PHILADELPHIA FLOWER SHOW - FROM MY POINT OF VIEW

The Pennsylvania Horticulture Society every year produces The PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL FLOWER SHOW - the largest indoor Flower Show in the WORLD!

"SPRINGTIME IN PARIS" is this year's theme! Over 250,000 people will talk through the blooming exhibits and gasp at all the built in beauty! I was honored and lucky enough to be invited by Bill Schaffer of Shaffer Designs and Kris Kratt to fly out early and assist on their team of designers to bring to life their interpretation of "AN AMERICAN IN PARIS."

When the theme was announced Bill and Kris knew they wanted to design around this 1950's classic, but they also wanted to be able to use video loops of scenes from the movie. MGM was not cooperating until someone discovered that the movie could be used for the purpose of horticulture education! I think that over 60 years ago, someone was dreaming of the day...and well, open your eyes - in 2011 the dream has become a reality - thanks to Bill and Kris!

My journey began with a quick flight to Philly where I teamed up with my pal, Jodi Duncan in baggage claim and we set off on our journey being escorted around the city by Kris Kratt in her Subaru (the leading sponsor of the Philadelphia Flower Show by the way ;)

We were able to catch up and visit in the Marketplace where a girl can find anything she desires, from famous cookies, over 50 kinds of pudding, to Amish men, to a chocolate heart or chocolate dentures....you think I'm kidding?

We met several of our design team members that night for dinner where we spent hours catching up and learning about each other and all of our journeys that had brought us to this adventure!

The next day our flower fun would begin by opening all of the fresh floral product and hard goods donated by incredible companies that believe in the power of education and the passion for this type of floral performance. Here is a list of all the contributors as well as a complete list of the 2011 Shaffer Design Team. We were all coordinated with our monogrammed scarves depicting the Schaffer logo.

For the next several days we would all work hours upon hours to create 4 scenes of An American in Paris in flowers. Bill and Kris had every detail sketched out and planned and the team worked like a well oiled machine.

My particular area was assisting with the Carnival Scene depicting the colorful dancing dresses! I have never used so many Oasis glue tubes in one day! Ever! I said, EVER!

Of course while I was at the Philly Show I was able to see other floral friends from AIFD and such designing for different exhibits. For me, traveling and being a part of something this spectacular is about the experience and lessons learned but also about connecting with people and sharing our passion for this industry we are so proud to be a part of!

I had to leave the Show early, before it opened to the public so I wasn't able to be there to see the smile on Bill and Kris' faces when they found out that Schaffer Designs swept all of the awards!!!
I was working on my wedding back in Birmingham when I received a text message from Jodi Duncan that alerted me of the big announcement. Of course it was immediately posted on Facebook and well, the rest has been depicted in photographs over the last few days and I am sure the plans for next year's ideas are beginning to create brainstorms!

I owe my roommates for the weekend a special thanks (Jodi Duncan and Lee Gallison) for keeping up with the room keys and for always finding a way to listen and learn from each other. I love you girls and I can't wait until we can have a pajama party with our Macs again!
I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to Mr. Bill Schaffer and Ms. Kris Kratt for believing in me and wanting/allowing me to have this experience. They know how magical it can be and are wonderful individuals for sharing it with all of us. Your creative genius is like no other. You are the Dynamic Duo.

A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO CAPTURE.

In the profession I have – being a floral and event designer – when I have a Saturday off, it is golden. A golden opportunity to …..sleep in? go antiquing? take my dog to the Railroad Park? If you know me – you know I LOVE all of these! BUT I also LOVE the opportunity to watch other creative people be creative.
Last Saturday, I had the golden opportunity to wait in the wings and observe the mega-minds behind DANIEL TAYLOR PHOTOGRAPHY capture moment after moment of monumental goodness. Kelli had precisely planned the details of the day and I waited in anticipation as Daniel captured every one of them.

My role in this photo shoot at the modern aLOFT Hotel in Homewood was to design a bridal bouquet that would complement the look and feel of the hotel as well as provide an undertone of a Birmingham Belle with Bohemian Boldness. Of course, I took the opportunity to stretch my limits and create a couple of other bouquets that I thought might entertain Daniel's camera for a few minutes.
The day couldn’t have been complete without two girls that stole the spotlight. One - a blonde bombshell, Keeley Patterson, when in front of the camera shines evidence of why she holds the title of Miss Mississippi.

The other - Scarlett - the dog that captured all of our hearts in the first frame. Kelli even made sure that Scarlett had the perfect collar to enhance the photographs and I whipped up some fun and whimsical accents to make her complement Keeley’s bouquets.

From the minute I revealed the floral designs to the minute that Daniel captured the last image of the afternoon, I was able to observe other “creatives” being creative. I LOVED every minute of it.

I am inspired by several different things I find in my daily life... everything from Martha Stewart to the natural curve of a willow stem.

HOTHOUSE 2011 TRENDS!!

One of the most popular questions I get asked at my speaking engagements and even in wedding consultations is WHAT are the new Trends for 2011??
Answers differ between who you ask - J.Crew, The Knot, Martha Stewart, Grace Ormonde & Anthropologie might give different trends...but here are MANDY MAJERIK - HOTHOUSE - TRENDS FOR 2011!

1) Vintage. So many brides are requesting to have that haphazard, garden-gathered, herb infused, lace accented, mix-matched china, teacup party, romantic blooms, magazine detailed wedding. Of course, I am quite the collector of white vases, hobnail vases and mason jars - A Vintage Bride should definitely be a Hothouse Bride!

2) Succulents. Who doesn't love these? Whether it is a textural garden container of mixed succulents for centerpieces to the details of succulent accents in the bridal bouquet - Succulents are everywhere!! In my opinion, it is one of those hidden secrets trickling into the Alabama bridal market. I have always loved these long-lasting plants and it is a great way to be green and re-use centerpieces as guest favors!

3) Cotton. Growing up I remember my Father bringing home Cotton from his trips back & forth to Selma, AL. From the soft, white hue to the relaxed texture - this element is a Southern favorite! I love using it as an unexpected element in everyday designs and in bridal bouquets. Cotton is also the perfect accent as a buttonhole for the ultimate Southern Gentleman! My favorite color pairing is Cotton and David Austin Juliet (peach) Garden roses...

4) Props. Whether an iron candelabra or a large piece of statuary, Brides are choosing to spend their budget on Props for their big day! As a wedding designer, I love having the opportunity to offer different, large-scale props that I can accent with floral enhancements. Most of the time, the request is simply to fill the space and provide guests with that "wow" factor. Props are a great way to make an impression and really let the floral enhancement attract some detailed attention!

5) Paper. From paper garlands to paper flowers, I have had numerous requests for this 'handmade' feel. I love using old books wrapped around vases or simply as a bouquet collar. It adds a romantic poetry touch to wedding ambiance. Most paper products, whether it be a pinwheel pendant, garlands or favor cones are very economical. It is a great alternative to add a bit of whimsical fun to your memorable event!

BONUS

6) Creative. Cake Plates. I love to give the suggestion of using a cake plate/plateau/stand that matches the rest of the wedding decor! If you are using all vintage/paper/succulent/cotton enhanced decor, you might want something a bit more your style than the traditional silver cake plateau. Hothouse provides several ready-made options for cake plates as well as loving the challenge to create one specifically with you in mind! I never want to take away from the beautiful wedding cake, but sometimes a well designed cake plateau is the perfect accent and makes the perfect pair!

The most popular color for 2011 IS.... really a toss up between 2 colors! Remember - it's all about the SHADE!

It was several months ago when several wedding industry vendors collected a few of our favorite things and met in Montgomery. Jessica Messer, of J. Messer Photography, one of the best photographers behind the camera, stood on chairs, laid on the floor, shot sideways and no matter what position - she captured some of my favorite shots to date!
We used a beautiful dress from Ivory & White and of course, Andy Tolar did a wonderful job holding the spots and picking the perfect color for the uplights!
These photos speak for themselves! Oh, my which one to get enlarged for my consultation area...or next ad...or..I hope you enjoy these as much as I am going to!

Every year is full of surprises, accomplished goals, soft failures, personal experiences, new friends, new discoveries, picture perfect moments, and many sleepless nights. All of these emotions, feelings, and experiences are hard to put into words, but here are some of my 2010 Experiences in 210 words or less!

HOTHOUSE HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE 2010

Year after year, there are always a few things that I look forward to during the Holiday Season. One is my annual Hothouse Open House. The Studio is an ever- changing display of inspiration, ideas and innovative products and props.
This year I decided to present holiday displays with an undertone of wedding ideas and inspiration.
With the help of Diane Olexa, of Olexa’s Café and Catering, I was able to create a couple of wedding cake displays and offer my guests a mouth-watering taste of some of the best wedding cake this city has to offer! Special thanks to Diane for sharing her cake and letting us eat it too!

The beautiful three-tier cake was nestled into a modern display of lavender roses, silver and black accents and our special Hothouse Holiday mascot – our deer.

The poppy was a perfect accent to the black and white undertone color scheme.

Here are some examples of details…branches, prisms, candles, mini callas and roses…lots of roses.

On the other side of the studio, guests were greeted by red accordian paper garlands and accordian circles.
The contrast of red and citron green brightened the room and gave an instant party atmosphere!
A candy collection included, ring pops, twizzlers, candy canes, mounds among others.
Special Thanks to Anna Reynolds of White Space Studio for designing our Open House invitations!

"Everything Matters"

As I sit here and begin to collect my thoughts for this blog, I find myself smiling and one thought keeps coming up and one photograph in particular. "Everything Matters." The slogan for Go Pro Event Solutions, Event Management team for Matt Jones Gallery, has this simple, but strong statement on the back of their production tees. As I stood in the back of the room, I realized that all of the vendors there knew that "Everything Matters" and we were all there working together to pull off this stunning night.

You see, I met Marty one afternoon and in an instant I knew this charismatic, Ed Hardy lovin' blonde was going to have lots of fun at her wedding and was going to let me have lots of fun designing her floral! She came prepared with pictures that ALL had branches and candles...and branches and candles...so I knew we were going to have branches and candles...and a whole lot of fun planning this wedding!

As our consultation began to reveal her vendors, the smile on my face began to get bigger and bigger. This savvy lady had chosen some of Birmingham's top wedding vendors to make sure her event would be one to remember- and run very, very smooth.
Jennifer, owner of Go Pro Event - led the team of vendors, incorporating Design Productions, B&A Warehouse, Hothouse Design Studio, Lucky Photography and several others.

When it came to "Everything Matters", Jennifer made sure that all the details were pulled together before that curtain was pulled to reveal a beautiful, blushing bride.
I made sure that as her floral vendor, I provided her with all the details that would pull her wedding theme together and unify her branches, her crystal dangles, her candles and her Grinch cake....yes, I said Grinch cake!

We snapped a few photos to have for our quick collection to share with you, but I cannot wait until Tiffany - Lucky Photography - has all of the images for me to share with you! I have worked with lots and lots of photographers, but there is simply something about her eye behind the lens that captures the simplest of details and finds the true spirit of her bride. I love her viewpoint and her blog! Here is her collage of the evening.....a professional perspective means a perfect picture.

I could go on and on and on about how beautiful Marty and Greg's wedding was but the important thing is they danced together, sang to the top of their lungs together and shared it with all their friends and family for one special night - one unforgettable night.

TUM TUM TREE FOUNDATION

Blogs are to not only be informative, but to be inspiring and eye candy. My friends, here is some eye candy from last week’s Tum Tum Tree Foundation Wine Auction. I had a great time working with the leaders of this amazing organization and was blessed to be part of such a wonderful benefit.

The wine auctioned was from very famous vineyards and celebrities near and far. Some bottles alone bid for $3,000.00!
We kicked off the festivities with a Friday night Wine Auction held at B&A Warehouse. My inspiration came from the stone props and my decision to accent them with beautiful, bright Fall colors. With Goddess Callas and an abundance of Roses, the night was alive with the feeling of giving – and well, the wine tasting gave a little inspiration as well.

The following day, I had the opportunity to work closely with Pardis Stitt of Bottega and coordinate a night of fabulous food, fabulous wine and fabulous floral!

Two tents were placed outside Bottega and accented with apple green fabric and great pin spots and gobo pattern lighting from AG Lighting!

I think that this organization speaks volumes for the amount of generosity our city has to offer. Thanks Tum Tum for this opportunity! I enjoyed every minute of it.

BAYFEST 2010 - REBA MCENTIRE

Of all the compact discs in my collection, there is only one artist that I have every compilation, greatest hits, best of, duets and brand new albums. The showstopper, REBA McENTIRE has always in my cd player since I was in Jr. High School. You can imagine my excitement when I received a phone call requesting my presence in Mobile at BAYFEST 2010 to enhance REBA’S trailer.

With my background in design (and my personal bias for the star) I didn’t even have to blink – as soon as I checked my calendar for weddings – I cleared my schedule and with a plan of action, I was on my way to Mobile.

Of course, a musicians/bands trailer is simply a model home complete with Rent-A-Center furniture. Is that good enough for REBA?!? The Bayfest Management didn’t think so and neither did I!
I selected several décor items from HOTHOUSE to accessorize her room and make it a warm and inviting place to spend the afternoon.

With my ALL ACCESS AND BACKSTAGE PASSES around my neck, I was set to sit side stage to watch her performance. As I sat there watching her connect with thousands of fans as far as the eye could see, I was transported back to the days of riding in my car “Fancy” blaring from the speakers, standing in line to get 5th row seats and fan fair meet & greets. I was one of her biggest fans then, and that little girl inside of me loved every minute of my BAYFEST experience.

After the event, BAYFEST Management reported that all of the bands were happy with their hospitality, especially REBA – her assistant said that was the best dressing room area they had seen in a long, long time!
Music to my ears!

SAF - This September, Every September!

Every September I look forward to one week that is dedicated to the love of the floral industry. Society of American Florists is a wonderful organization that spends so much time planning a week full of seminars, networking and recognizing those in the industry that have achieved high excellence in his/her field.
I just returned home from my annual trip and I came away with the feeling that being surrounded by other retail florists, wholesalers and growers really impact you and ultimately your business. It was so nice to re-connect with old friends and have the opportunity to make new ones.
Once my flight arrived and I was driven to the beautiful OMNI Hotel in Orlando my engaging experience began.
The first full day of my week I was surrounded by 10 people in 1 room for 7 hours. You might think this would have been a daunting task, but it was some of the most thought provoking hours I have spent in several months. I am a member of the SAF Consumer Marketing Committee and our responsibility is to plan and project where SAF will focus, promote and spend marketing dollars to increase awareness of the floral industry. I met several people in this meeting that voiced their opinions about the industry and at the end of the meeting we were all in agreement of the direction we and SAF needed to go.

A special thanks to Jenny Sparks of SAF for her hard work on this committee and keeping us all on task! I always say that if I didn’t have a floral business, I would be doing one of two things.
1) being a visual designer for Anthropologie
2) Marketing – I probably would have been responsible for a Super Bowl commercial by now ;)
The next day I enjoyed a wonderful breakfast and listening to a great motivational speaker. We all need to hear and be reminded of some of the small things in our lives that affect our daily lives and how we are the only ones empowered enough to change things.
Quickly after that I was whisked away to be a presenter on the panel of the “Social Media” segment. Along with two other great social networkers, the panel was a great success and we all learned from each other and our audience! Thanks to SAF for asking me to be a part of such a great session.

After a day of networking and seminars, I settled down to have dinner with one of my best friends in the industry, J Schwanke, Kelly, Rene and several other new friends that would shine to be great connections in this industry.
The next day would turn out to be full of action and excitement as the 43rd Annual Sylvia Cup Design Contest took place. After all of the designers had completed their beautiful tasks, three judges were responsible for looking over each one and critiquing them one design at a time. Marie, Roger and I had a great afternoon ahead of making comments (good and bad) making sure that we had a deserving winner chosen as well as using our thoughts to encourage the others about how they could better their abilities. Congratulations to Kyle Roberson the 2010 Sylvia Cup Winner! Here are some of his winning designs!

SAF always presents a wonderful Industry Awards Dinner and this year was no exception. Congratulations to so many winners that night, but a special Congrats to ALL 15 (yes, I said 15) new PFCI inductees! Welcome to our circle of talkers…good luck if you can get a word in! Hope you enjoy your WOW book you received. You will even find some words of wisdom from me in there!!
I can’t let this blog go by without a screaming shout out to Mr. J Schwanke, who was recognized this night by SAF with receiving the infamous Tommy Bright Award. I personally agree that there is no other fitting recipient and I was so proud for him as he stood at that podium and delivered an A rate acceptance speech while his family – mother, father, sister, brother-in-law and Kelly – beamed back at him. While I was sitting there in the crowd of hundreds, I knew he had touched my life and I knew that there were so many others in that audience that felt the same. He presents Passion in its purest form.

The next few days would follow up to be as inspiring as the first few and I make note after note in the information sessions – Weddings, Corporate Consumers, Premiere Products, etc.
One interesting bloom in this year's Outstanding Variety Competition is this new lily! What happens when a lily meets a rose?

I left the OMNI to go visit another family (my real blood relatives) who live in Orlando and I am thankful everyday that my travels refresh me and energize me both personally and professionally.
As I am sitting in the Orlando Airport (with an hour and a half delay) I catch myself smiling while typing these words. Perhaps my smiles will be contagious to all the children with their Nintendo DS’ and overstuffed Mickey Mouses – Mickey Mice? (that won’t fit in the overhead bin) who stare back at me.
I love to share these stories with the rest of the industry whether you are sad you weren’t able to travel to SAF this year or that this entices you to join me next year, everyone should have the opportunity to connect - Connect with others and Re-Connect with themselves.
I love meeting all the dots and I love even more being able to connect with them.
(Sidenote: I haven’t been to Orlando in 6 years – I will be back in this Airport 4 more times within the next three weeks – so more Mickey Mouse business to come!)

NATURE'S CREATIVE EDGE 2010

Tuesday morning at 5:30am my Nature’s Creative Edge 2010 journey began. A quick plane trip to Evansville, Indiana was in store and when I landed, I was greeted with the biggest smile and head of curls from Ms. Jodi Duncan! As any mother would, Jodi had packed us some great snacks for our 8 hour road trip to Fruitport, Michigan. As we began our journey, we caught up sharing stories of our families, our floral friends and our future plans. Of course, on this road trip there was no need for the radio – when you get both of us together a moment of silence is rare!

After a fresh night’s rest, we were bright eyed and ready to begin our Nature’s Creative Edge journey. I had heard many great tales of the previous “woods” experience and wanted to break free and grab a bit of time for myself to get back to nature and connect with other industry professionals in a very relaxed atmosphere. I couldn’t have planned or expected what would happen over the next three days.

I was there to be an assistant. In my floral career sometimes it is nice to relax and simply offer a helping hand to a fellow designer. Jodi had shared her ideas and inspiration (Boondocks from Little Big Town) that would be the theme of her art installation. Of course, being a Southerner, I could share in the familiarity of the song - “a tin roof, a front porch and a gravel road.”

After walking through the wood chip path lined with beautiful wood trunks and wild foliage, I realized just exactly what this journey was about - Connecting with Nature, Connecting with People and most of all Re-Connecting with myself.
There is something a bit surreal about being in such a beautiful place and watching dozens of designers share their creative talent with Mother Nature. These designers were bringing in buckets of flowers, props and candles to enhance this beautiful place for all of the public to enjoy. One highlight of my day was to ride in the back of the big red truck onto over 90 acres of beautiful woodland to harvest fresh moss. This uninhibited habitat is the foundation for acres of fresh, green sheet and reindeer moss. With 7 other people in the back of the truck going through mud puddles (big ones) and swinging branches, I felt like a kid again! As I looked over at Jodi, Suzie and Laura, I realized I wasn’t the only kid in the group. Sometimes the floral industry can be full of fame seeking, label flaunting, self proclaimed fabulous designers, but in the back of that truck – it was real – it was sweatshirts, (wet biscuits –ha!) rain boots and ball caps. It was real people, real life and….real fun.

After a couple of days of watching all of these designers work so diligently on their projects, it was time that the lighting be put in place and the final walkthrough made before the public could enjoy. Last night as we all sat around a family table, sharing dinner and stories of our experiences throughout our careers, I realized that it didn’t matter I was hundreds of miles away from my home, I was with a close knit family and I felt very welcomed and honored to share this time with them. After we finished our home-made desserts, night had fallen and I walked through one final time to reflect on all the hard work all of the designers completed. Working through the cool, early mornings, the rain and the dark, these designers revealed their devotion and love of this industry. This creative exercise is a fundraiser for the North Central AIFD chapter. A wonderful idea started a few years ago and now a tradition on Bob Frise’s beautiful property.
After sharing our goodbyes with Bob and the rest of the designers, we were back to the hotel to begin our journey home.

With a 5:30am wake up call, I rolled over to find a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed Ms. Duncan sitting on the edge of her bed, fresh curls, dressed in layers, leggings with scarf to match and I knew why her husband, kids, clients and her floral friends love her. Normally if the car ride is over 4 hours, I choose to fly into my destination, but I knew that part of my journey this week was my time spent with this amazing friend – a total of over 14 hours in the car! I listened, I learned, I laughed, (oh did I laugh) and most of all I loved the opportunity to experience such a great heart, a great talent and a great visionary. Whether it was over our 100 mile journey to find a Cracker Barrel, sharing our secrets over dessert, or eating cookies for breakfast it was evident that sometimes in life it’s the little things that can mean the most.

As I sit in seat 11 C, at an altitude of 31, 000 feet, typing on my Apple, I am thankful and I feel blessed to live the life I do. I have the luxuries in life – all I need, I have the loving family I am going home to and I have a wonderful life full of memories that I will cherish forever. This week has been another chapter in my book – another volume in my series perhaps, but I wouldn’t backspace or change a thing.

PERFECT WEDDING GUIDE - SOHO SHOW!

All of you who were able to attend the Perfect Wedding Guide show at SOHO on August 8, 2010 realize that this is one of the best wedding shows in Birmingham! I definitely had a blast meeting and greeting all of you and your mothers ;)

Again this year, I was honored to design a room, including layout, color scheme and design elements. My theme this year was
"FRESH" and instantly, I knew that I wanted to enhance the room with the colors of grass green, bark brown and for an extra punch, I added a little splash of orange! For texture, I introduced a few plants as my vendor table centerpieces and gave a modern flair with using glass containers filled with soil - quite the unusual scale between soil and plant, but of course, that is what I like!

The main focal point of the room was an old, worn wooden green table with two orange benches flanking the sides. Green and Brown check pillows added to the comfort as well as matched the "FRESH" circle banners hung on the back of the benches. The circle banners are a great way to personalize anything at a wedding - from the bride and groom chairs to the cupcake banner!
The centerpiece structure was a simple metal frame covered with paper pinwheels and below were several pieces of white milk glass filled with plants and Orange 'Miracle' roses!

I must admit I have quite the collection of milk glass containers and vases, which are perfect for a wedding with vintage flair! Here, I like the contrast of the nostalgic feel with a modern punch.

In my booth, I used a shelving unit and filled it with milk glass bud vases (go ahead and dig under your grandmother's sink - you might find a few ;) and mixed them with some fresh bridal bouquets. I reinforced my patterns and theme by using white display stands with "FRESH" lined along the case.

Not only was it great to be surrounded by newly-engaged brides, their mothers, great food from The Historic Rucker Place, Olexa's cake and good friends, but some of the most talented and professional wedding vendors in town! Special THANKS to Jennifer Gowers and the Go Pro team, who were over production and of course, all the ladies at PWG and Engaged Library!

SIDENOTE: In case you didn't know, Daniel and Kelli did my new promo/branding photos for my wedding designer site MANDY MAJERIK: THE CREATIVE! Of course that is a whole blog in itself, but here are a sneak peek of a few of my favorites!!!

I also worked with Brooke Mason of Ivory & White to design her booth for the show! I think that this white cabinet accented with paper leaves and flowers looked great in her space and gave great display for her selection of accessories!

I usually take Sundays for a little "me' time to visit with my family, but I enjoy those days I get to spend it with so many of my friends! Thanks for stopping by the booth and by the blog!

MY 3OTH BIRTHDAY BASH!

For those of you who don't know, I am a collector of the old "Blue Boy" prints. I have square ones, round ones, ornate ones, faded ones, thrift store ones and I cherish each and every one of them. My collection began when I inherited a large Blue Boy framed print from my Aunt. Shortly after, I took a road trip from Alabama to Virginia. I can't take a road trip without stopping at every antique mall/store in sight! I began to notice every time we would stop, I would find one - large and small. Thus my collection was born and has been growing ever since. Appropriately so, my Birthday Bash theme was born.

My friends did a wonderful job pulling all the details of my day together! I have so many people to thank for lending their talents and muscles to make sure that I had a smile on my face!

One of my favorite things was the "sign-in" cards. Anna Reynolds, my graphic designer for all HH brand material, designed these for me as a gift and keepsake for me to add to my collection. I loved each and every sentiment left behind by my guests.

No birthday is complete without a cake! I taste her wedding cakes almost every other weekend, and visit her cafe for a sweet treat in between. Diane Olexa is one of the most beautiful people in the wedding industry - inside and out. It was a treat to have her cake there and even sweeter to have her there to officially cut it! Needless to say, there was none left ;)

Who can have cake without ice cream? Chef David Bromley fixed me up with these large blocks of ice with holes to perfectly hold "Blue" Bell ice cream! We had four different flavors...Summer Berries, Milk Chocolate, Peaches & Cream and Homeade Vanilla.

MY MONTH IN REWIND...

I LOVE to facebook. I LOVE to tweet. I LOVE to blog, but when I slowed down enough to realize it had been over a month since my last blog - I had a reality check! There are times when I can sneak a few minutes to share some great photos of my weddings, events and share a few personal pics, but for the last month, I have been focusing on moving from one event to another!
I have had the pleasure of sharing several bride's wedding days, working with one of the top designer's in the wedding industry, designing one of the most popular social events of the year, designing for one of the busiest floral holidays of the year, doing photo shoots for several leading magazines, planning photo shoots for other magazines, being published in a Russian Floral magazine, working in floral product development, watching my nephew Mason turn ONE! and most importantly sharing MY 30TH BIRTHDAY with some of my closest friends and family!
I want to share each one of these events in a special blog - which will come soon - but for now here is a collage of what has been going on in my world over the last month and a half!

WELCOME TO MY THIRTIES - THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST DECADE YET!

PROM WITH PROMISING RESULTS

I must admit, in the past I have never really loved being a floral designer when it came time for local high school proms. For me, when prom time came around, that meant prom wrist corsages. At my mother's florist (2nd generation) we produced hundreds of corsages in a single weekend.
Wrist corsages can be intense when it comes to matching styles, colors, size, wristlets, accents, florals and much more!
They are very labor intensive and are created with a very detailed eye.
Recently my clients have simply given me creative liberty to create a spectacular floral presentations for these high school trendsetters. I seem to always get the unusual requests "My son is wearing an ORANGE suit" or "My daughter's dress has every color of the rainbow in it!". I take each and everyone's specific detail into consideration in creating this memorable floral that will go down in their "Glee" history.
Here are a few of my favorites from this year...

I even had some new clients from this one! The girl wore a lime green dress with turquoise accents. I quickly dreamed up this peacock presentation. Several peacock feathers were curled out of the corsage to present that tail spreading up her arm! I loved it!

In case you haven't noticed, I have been in love with these paper leaves and flowers! I love to use them in my bouquets and corsages. When the mother and daughter came in to pick up her corsage, the mother's comment was, "I always love it when something gives me chills! It exceeded my expectations! I love it! You are going to have the best corsage again this year!" I guess that speaks for itself....people love creativity - and appreciate it!

Butterflies are my thing. Ever since my debut of the orange butterfly in my Alabama Weddings photo shoot, I have been addicted! Here I had a girl that was wearing a tangerine colored dress. I decided to use some beautiful spray roses and butterfly wings to accent. I also added a bit of sparkle to attract the light - or the flashes of all those cameras!

It is also very important when I design something that is so specific to my brand, that I continue to the branding presentation by accenting the corsage box and using Hothouse Design Studio ribbon to present my name in front of other potential clients.
There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a smile on my client's face when they pick up their corsage and then the next weekend have a new client come in and show my pictures on their camera of the previous one from the week before. They saw it and wanted to make sure theirs was as unique as that one! You never know who is looking, paying attention and taking notes. Afterall, it is high school and everyone notices the trendsetters. I am the trendsetter's floral artist - and I love that!

I definitely remember my prom and my corsage...you can only imagine how large the florist daughter's wristlet was! Too bad they pics aren't on my Mac...perhaps I will dig into my mother's archives and bring back a little old school in a post coming soon! Believe me, you don't want to miss that one!!!!

PERFECT WEDDING GUIDE AND MELISSA RYCROFT!

A few posts back, I referenced creating bouquets for Melissa Rycroft during her recent visit to Birmingham to visit with Perfect Wedding Guide. The national webstie published an interview with her as a teaser for their upcoming issue including a full-on article with Melissa. Amidst the interview were some teaser pictures from her photo shoot where I created all the beautiful bouquets she held.
Here are a few of my favorites!

I used some of the freshest, most fragrant freesia for this bouquet - and of course a touch of the butterfly accent!

This was one of my favorite dresses of the day!

The bouquet was made of beautiful roses and amaranthus. I also accented with paper leaves and flowers to add a unique flair and Hothouse twist! Everyone loved the paper accent. With Hothouse, you must always expect the unexpected!

MARCH AS SEEN FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY

March was definitely the month for my travels! I think I spent more time outside of Alabama than I did inside!

I began with a trip to Chattanooga, TN for my annual Southern AIFD Symposium. This is always a weekend I look forward to! It is full of the most talented floral designers in the South and a weekend of action packed design shows. For the first time I met the guys from Foxgloves & Ivy - Atlanta's only Green Florist! Greg and Larry were great and presented a memorable show and inspired so many of us along the way!

Here is a picture of Kevin, owner of Le Fleur, in Memphis, TN. He is the incoming Southern President - a position he will wear well.

I left Chattanooga on my way to San Francisco, CA for the inaugural Wedding 360 Academy of Planners + Designers. There is oh so much I could say about this wonderful trip, but just a few of the highlights...

Next I was off to Las Vegas, NV where 7 friends from across the US were reconnecting to celebrate a friend's birthday.
As the saying goes, "What happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas."

HOTHOUSE WEDDING WEEKEND

I call it a Hothouse Wedding Weekend when I get the opportunity to shake hands and meet all the new engaged women Birmingham has to offer!
Recently, I had the Hothouse Wedding Weekend of the year!

It all started early Saturday morning when Melissa Rycroft was in Birmingham and had a photo shoot for the Perfect Wedding Guide cover. I was honored to be asked to design 4 bouquets that would be featured in her hands in the cover shot. This would normally be where I would insert a few pictures, but you will have to wait until the summer cover debuts...which one will they choose???...

After that I headed over to Old Car Heaven, a very unique venue in downtown Birmingham, to set up my installation vignette for "The White Wedding." Heidi Elnora organized this kickoff party to debut her Signature 2010 bridal collection. There were over 12 floral participants which all received an inspiration board, a vintage white automobile and a beautiful Heidi Elnora gown.

My inspiration board was entitled "Steel City" and here is my interpretation through props and floral.

Whenever you get friends in the floral industry together - you never know what might happen! We all loved Diane's creations! Mmmm....

The Perfect Wedding Guide and Go Pro teamed up with The Wynfrey to produce one of the best Wedding Shows in the Birmingham area! Sunday morning (after a long night of fun with friends!) the Hothouse teamed showed up with an interesting "booth." This year I wanted to do something different. I didn't want a round table...I didn't want an 8' table...I wanted to be different. Of course, no one expected for me to bring in an 8' sphere and nonetheless, to confine myself inside to discuss the beautiful florals that surrounded me. I chose a very romantic palate of lavender, pink, and hues of red accented with lots and lots of candlelight.
I love flowers - I love props - and I love to make the overall impact. I love what I do and it shows.

The Wynfrey hosted an after party for the wedding industry participants where I was honored to receive a W.E.D.G.E award. All of my colleagues voted for me as "Best Actress" - the woman who is on top of her game!

This past weekend has been filled with love, love, love!

Valentine's Day is one of the busiest times of the year for your neighborhood florist. Although, this year we celebrated on Sunday, we were able to deliver love all over town several days last week.

This year was definitely a first for me - I have never delivered Valentine's blooms in the snow!

Friday we were making our first rounds of deliveries when the flakes began to fall. After deliveries were made, I was able to come home to LOFT 404 and enjoy the snowy scene from my city windows. It was beautiful!

Saturday began with a few slippery spots, but that didn't stop 'the love mobile' from traveling!

From Inverness to Gardendale, we spread the love all over the city!

Sunday (Valentine's Day) was Vulcan's "I DO WITH A VIEW" where 7 couples were going to exchange their vows with a breathtakingly beautiful view of Birmingham.

I was honored to accent the ceremony site with simple, but dramatic floral pieces. I took the opportunity to design all of the bouquets and bouts, decorate the walkway, the cake table backdrop and my favorite part - add a Valentine Vulcan to the setting. Yes (for those who might wonder) I was in fact, the person, who added a white rose to the Vulcan statue. (Its all in the photographer's angle ;)

I personally took the weekend to go see the blockbuster move "Valetine's Day."

It was rumored that Ashton Kutcher's character owned a flower shop - so obviously, that was a must see for me! I must admit he looked good in pink - I'd let him deliver my flowers any day!

I am catching myself wonder lately - is owning a flower shop "cool?" I mean, on the big screen, we have been seeing not only Ashton in Valentine's Day, but Jennifer Anniston in Love Happens, own a flower shop. I must be cool too ;)

It definitely is tv! The interest must be the romantic side, because they don't ever show them scrubbing the buckets or recycling the flower boxes! What can I say - it is a glamourous job (ha! just imagine my laughter). If you ever want to see that romantic side, I'll give you a broom and you can work your way up ;)

TIME FLIES!!!

Since the last time we chatted, we have entered a new decade and kicked off 2010 with a bang!

I have been very busy with weddings, bridal shows, redesigning the showroom and preparing for V-Day, Valentine's Day - the day of love - the day of 200 deliveries - the day of last minute doghouse prevention.

Time flies...but here are a few pictures from the latest weddings and events!

HIGHLAND HOME

A simple home wedding with a vintage heirloom, antique feel. I used lots of babies breath, pink ribbon, pearls, pink sweetheart roses, vintage silver teapots and candles to create this warm and inviting decor. Oh, and what a beautiful home overlooking Highland Avenue!

Pedestals were used to display silver candelabras and vintage teapots.

The chandelier was adorned with a pink rose ball with a finishing touch of pink satin ribbon.

A family heirloom statue was used on the buffet and we adorned it with a mini babies breath garland.

I loved this vintage cake topper! Look closely for the white and black Scottish terriers - their names are Neiman & Marcus and they are the homeowners pride and joy - what is the luck of finding that on a vintage topper!?!

WINTER WEDDING

As the wintery weather approached, my January bride worked closely with me and Jennifer Gowers of GoPro Events to make sure her winter wedding was one to remember! The church was adorned with white hydrangea, white casablanca lilies, fantail willow and white French tulips. The reception on the other hand was very warm and inviting layering reds and reds on top of reds. And of course - branches - how can we forget the one element that tied all of the decor together!?! Andy Tolar of Design Productions lit the Avon Theater with a red glow, Diane Olexa made beautiful and delicious cakes and everyone enjoyed themselves at this stylish event!

The focal centerpiece of red roses and ilex berries - branches, candles, and rose petals galore. This one was a show stopper!

Here is a detailed shot of a bridal bouquet I designed a few weeks ago incorporating a bit of paper. Look closely at the collar of paper leaves and the coordinated vase it was delivered in - it's all about presentation ;)

VALENTINE'S DAY

As I mentioned above - Valentine's Day is quickly approaching and I am setting the shop with red and and signs of Love. Mark your calendar for February 11 - 14. We will be delivering love all over town and well, let us impress your loved one! Here is a quad pic of our front wall. Paper, dangles and 14's, oh my!

Every year I have the pleasure of working with some of the top wedding industry partners 0n our Alabama Weddings Photo Shoots! This year I was thankful to have two Signature Style Series in the magazine - one featuring Hothouse floral design and the other featuring my overall design concept and execution!

My design concept and execution of Industrial Couture took place at Historic Sloss Furnace. Thanks to all of the vendors and helping hands that made this shoot possible! Also, I was excited to find out that the bouquet shot by Tera will be the Summer Cover Shot! Enjoy the photos and for more extensive detail - pick up one of the new issues on newsstands now!

The entrance, ceremony site and reception site were all located in various areas of Sloss. The venue really does offer so much color and texture to the photos. I loved it!

DECEMBER DAYS

December 27th and I am nestled in for the night, still enjoying the warm glow of Christmas lights, just finished calling my brother to wish him a Happy Birthday, reminiscing over the last few days of festive Holiday Cheer and planning for Hothouse 2010. I have been collecting so many ideas and inspirations over the last few months that I am so excited to introduce to all of you in 2010!

Rolling back to the Days of December...

I had the pleasure of decorating numerous homes and businesses for the Holiday season, taking a trip down to Montgomery to decorate the Governor's Mansion again, creating beautiful floral designs for several weddings and events, teaching Holiday decorating classes, enjoying all of the Holiday home tours in Birmingham, making holiday gifts and gift baskets for several of my top clients to share with their top clients, and most of all, celebrated the season with family and friends in my loft and all around this town we call home. From watching a few snowflakes fall on Christmas Day to making sure my White Christmas Sangria had the perfect amount of floating fruit - no detail went unnoticed. Here are a few highlights from my Holi - days!

The Governor's Mansion Dining room was adorned with hues of chocolate, silver and winter white. Using homespun elements such as, yarn, paper, candles and ribbons, I created a Warm Winter White theme including the infamous Riley - the Reindeer (how appropriate he was visiting

Gov. Riley for a while).

I had a blast teaching a local organization how to make a Christmas Wreath! We had so much fun and everyone put their own personal style into making something fitting for their home and personality!

I hosted a Loft party for the festive crowd in my space and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the off the wall decor! What do you expect from a yarn lovin' girl like me?!?

The vintage car tag that hangs above The Councils reads "Birmingham, Alabama - City of Floral Beauty" You knew I couldn't resist that when I saw it! Anyone ever heard that before?!?

Of course, I enjoyed this Christmas with my family, including our new edition, Mason - my nephew!

I truly believe my brother and I have been replaced...Santa now has Mason's list to check off...and what does his Aunt Mandy buy a sweet boy like him for Christmas? Well, I couldn't resist his first pair of Converse tennis shoes! I think I will buy me a matching pair ;)

Of course, I couldn't resist taking Jasper, my Cocker Spaniel, to see Santa! Naughty or Nice...

A ROLLER COASTER RIDE!

Whew it has been a while since I last blogged about my adventures as a floral artist! I want to catch up on so much that has taken place since my last moment to sit down and reflect and share with you some images from our exciting events!

November proved to be a roller coaster ride for me right into the holiday season! Here is a quick rewind from the last few weeks.

Recently, I had the honor of working with Carol Waites to make sure that her daughter said "I do" in style! After walking down the aisle with a bouquet of white peonies, red roses, green cymbidium orchids, artichoke bud and other textural surprises, the party was set and ready to go at Matt Jones Gallery. With Jennifer Gowers at the helm, the event was definitely well organized and went off with a bang!

The food table was a cloverleaf design with an iron stand topped off with a luscious mound of fresh flowers. Mini calla lilies and orchids accented the bottom for an extra added touch.

Centerpieces were dualing designs - one low and luscious on top of a cylinder housing mini calla lilies and the other a tall pilsner vase with luscious floral on top and red berries and candlelight to cushion at the base.

It truly was a beautiful event and definitely made memories to cherish for years to come.

Within a blink of an eye, Thanksgiving was upon us! I had the opportunity to assist Rachel in hosting her holiday soiree of family and friends to a Thanksgiving dinner. I set up three tablescapes around her beautiful Highland home. Here are a few examples of the exquisite taste Rachel has and my interpretation of a stylish holiday table centers.

Most of you who know me, know this is one of the busiest times of the year! It is time to drag out that old green tree, test the lights, go to CVS to buy new lights, return home to decorate, tilt the tree to make it stand straight, watch it fall, clean up all the broken ornaments and stand back and think..."I should have called Mandy."

Oh, yes! It is that time of year that I scurry about town decking the halls of your neighbor's house and some of the businesses you frequent.

Here are a few of the trees and decor we have already put up this year and well, we still have several to go before next week!

I am hoping to get this blog out tonight, so that I can get a bit of rest before I go decorate the Alabama Governor's Mansion for the holidays. In case you missed it, I have incorporated a shot from last year's decor and well, all I can say about this year is...come see it yourself! The Governor's Mansion Open House is December 7, 14, and 21st from 5-7. I look forward to seeing you there!

TRICK OR TREAT...HALLOWEEN WEDDING

ROBIN AND BRAD

What can be more fun than getting married on Halloween? You have to be a light-hearted, fun-lovin couple who knows how to throw a party!

Robin and Brad planned their wedding day to include lots of treats for all of their guests and sharing one of the most important days of their lives with tons of trick-or-treaters.

The color scheme was of course, orange and black with a spark of green for a bit of interest.

One of my favorite small details of the day was that all of the groomsmen wore green, Converse tennis shoes.

Robin carried a bouquet of beautiful orange tulips with a mixed collar of orange florals including montbretia, craspedia and peruvian lilies.

All of the bridesmaids carried monochromatic green floral bouquets highlighting texture as a major component.

Brad had a fun, cooridinating bout and a fun personality to match!

The only one who might have been cuter was the ring man...

CATCHING UP AT ACCENT DECOR

Every time I go to market to find the latest trends in home decor and floral function, I always have Accent Decor on my list! Their showroom is always set with the most up-to-date products available. Last week, I escaped from the studio to go and visit the Accent Decor warehouse - which includes a beautiful showroom of products as well as a warehouse full that I can load up and take with me - well, whatever will fit in my Commander - always limited..I must quit shopping when either the space or the money runs out - whichever comes first!

On this trip there was an added bonus! J Schwanke (JTV/uBloom) was in the showroom taping an webisode. Dodie Sy, the uBloom contest winner was also there to tape his webisode featuring his award winning design Sophie!

Among the other surprises...I was able to share a few stories with Els Teunissen and chat with Margaret, owner of Accent Decor.

Other than visiting and enjoying my afternoon, I was there to shop afterall! As I perused around the showroom, I stopped and admired the "rocks" that were blinding me...well, there is a size for everyone.

After that I rolled my cart around the "sale" part of the warehouse and found a few great prizes! Have you ever seen a girl who can turn down a bargain?

Of course a trip to Atlanta is not complete without a visit to IKEA. Here I was trying out a desk for my loft. I settled on an all metal to sit in front of my chalkboard wall.

It was nice to have a day away from the studio to visit with friends, old and new!

FROM BIRDS OF A FEATHER TO FEATHERED MASKS...

It was one of the most anticipated weddings of the year for several Birmingham movers and shakers. Heidi Elnora (Standridge) of Heidi Elnora, wedding gown designer and Project Runway contestant and Jeff Baker said "I do" October 17 at Mtn. Brook Community Church and then threw a Masquerade Ball Reception at the historic Showplace of the South, the Alabama Theatre. The entrance of the church was adorned with handtieds of 4 foot calla lilies with babies breath collars and guests signed in at a table supporting an oversized bird cage accented with clusters of florals and with two lovely doves inside.

Babies breath halos highlighted all of the flower girls and bridesmaids had simple hydrangeas and feathers nestled in their hair to coordinate with their beautiful Heidi-handmade attire. The most eye-catching floral display of the wedding was what accented Mrs. Heidi Baker herself.

Heidi carried a 5 foot cascading bouquet of cotton, dendrobium orchids, Patience Garden roses, spray roses, freesia, Queen Anne's lace and white mini calla lilies.

Heidi, Jeff and their family all enjoyed a quiet, simple ceremony and then left to prepare for the fun night ahead!

Once at the Alabama Theatre, guests were greeted by masked waiters with champagne and took a seat in the Theatre to watch Heidi and Jeff have their first dance accompanied by an orchestra on stage. In the Grand Foyer, Hothouse was able to show a beautiful display of a purple dendrobium orchid chandelier that stood high above the guests and anchored the main food display.

Throughout the Theatre food stations were located and a fun and festive "Trick or Treat" room was designed by us with a display of several different glass containers all labeled and napkins that read "til death do us part." The evening wrapped up with rock band taking the stage and everyone enjoying a piece of a 6 layer wedding cake designed by Barb Cakes.

Look for Heidi and Jeff's wedding to be featured in several magazines and blogs including Alabama Weddings coming out in January! Heidi had a wonderful team of floral professionals that worked together to produce this amazing event - Confero Productions, Angela Karen Photography, Kathy G. and Company, Lance Holloway Videography and Barb's Cakes.

One of my favorite things of the day was the display that greeted guests in the street window box of the Alabama Theatre. If you look to the left you will see me making sure that all the details are taken care of - everything from displaying the dress and bouquet to sprinkling over 200 pink roses in the window. So much fun!!!

OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS

It has been a whirlwind since I have last blogged about all of the cool weddings and events Hothouse has been a part of! I am going to hit the highlights of my favorite things from my October weddings and events so far!

From the Birmingham Museum of Art to B&A's Open House - Hothouse creativity was evident to all!

Here are a few pictures from the beginning. I think part of the fun of a blog is to let all of you know the process that the final presentation goes through to look that good!

With an Asian-ethnic theme, I began in the woods cutting down a bit of bamboo. (Don't try this at home ;) A little overloaded?

St. Paul's Cathedral was decorated in the most tasteful fashion, of course with a bit of Hothouse twist.

The colors of the exotic arrangement were so bright and vibrant inside as well as the Holy Water ring of rich, fall hues.

Then it was on to the Birmingham Museum of Art to install a fabric ceiling treatment with a fresh orchid chandelier hovering high above the beautiful butter cream wedding cake.

This display of tropical florals was a perfect match for the artful environment. Vanessa & Antonio thank you for letting me be such a special part of your wedding!

Abby Dupuy was probably the most organized bride I have ever had! I enjoyed every minute of the planning process and I loved that she was ready to use magenta and lime green mixed with black for her wedding! The front doors of the church were adorned with luscious fresh floral wreaths.

Her reception was highlighted with a magenta ribbon ring accented with green cymbidium orchids.

Centerpieces were collections of glass cubes with a fresh floral mix and floating candles. I have found that "collection" centerpieces are some of my bride's favorites!

Katie and Vincent were up for fun floral rooted in tradition. For Katie's bridesmaids we made all monobotanical bouquets like this one made of cymbidium orchids.

Our noted hydrangea squares adorned the exterior lanterns to welcome guests.

Susan Mason of B&A Warehouse knows how to throw a party! She invited me to display a bit of Hothouse creativity inside her crossing room for her annual Open House. Of course, I welcomed the opportunity and used it to introduce a new rental item from Hothouse. We now have these eye catching settees. Call me to rent them for your next event!

I enjoy every minute of what I do - if I didn't I would have gotten out of the wedding industry a long time ago! From cutting bamboo to placing the flowers on the cake, I am there for every bride and make sure that her day is just what she pictured!

SAF - FRIENDS IN PHOENIX

Recently I jumped on a plane to leave rainy Birmingham only to land in the middle of the Phoenix desert - where no rain or water was to be found! It was amazing to me that the terrain was so different as I flew over the sandy hills.

I have never seen as many cacti in one place...from short squatty ones to the tallest in the desert...

After I arrived I was greeted by all of the talented and devoted SAF staff. They planned and executed a wonderful, educational weeks worth of activities. Kate Penn, editor of Floral Management, and I had a few minutes to catch up at SAF 125th Party!

The SAF convention is focused on presenting programs on marketing, trends, new products and the Outstanding Varieties in flowers.Here are some beautiful award winning Anthuriums and Garden Roses.

Another attraction was the live, commentated design competition, The Sylvia Cup. I participated in the event with some of the best designers from around the country. Here is an example of my work - my sympathy presentation for a rose lover!

At the Awards dinner, I was inducted into PFCI - Professional Floral Communicators International. There are only approx 80 in the country and I am proud to say, I am the first from Alabama! Here is Ross Railey and myself at dinner enjoying ourselves amongst our floral friends!

Of course you all know that lately in my travels, I have had to fit in a little bit of fun! On my last trip to Memphis, I got an Elvis tattoo, of course my SAF trip couldn't be any different...so - to commemorate SAF 125th Anniversary - we all got tattoos!

Among my friends at SAF, I caught up with Amy from Amy's Orchids in Thailand and Ian Prosser who designed this beautiful arch using Amy's Orchids!

I enjoyed my trip and I look forward to catching up with everyone again real soon! Oh, and I

forget one of my favorite parts of my vacation! Ross and I found ourselves under the outdoor Oasis by the pool drinking these....mmm....

WHIRLWIND OF A WEEk

Usually I just blog about one event and all the details...but this one is going to be different! I am going to go through the last few days and hit all of the highlights! Its been a Whirlwind of a Week!

Thursday 11:00am

Christopher (Confero Productions) and I headed up to visit with Michelle of Alabama Weddings to preview photos from our Signature Style Series coming out in the new magazine January 2010.

After lunch, we headed out to Michelle's new office to sit down and view over 800 photos! It is almost impossible to choose among those and condense them down to the few that will grace the pages of the wedding magazine.

Here are a couple of sneak peak photos from the shoot...

Tera and Wes (Armosa Studios) did a wonderful and amazing job capturing my florals at my shoot from historic Sloss Furnace. The color of the day was definitely orange and a butterfly frenzy! This is just a teaser....look for the rest in January!

Mark Broadway (Mark Broadway Photography) captured the mood and feel from Confero Productions shoot at Workplay. The photos from this shoot were an excellent example of how photographers use lighting in their work. I did the flowers - very luscious!

Friday 10:00pm

Friday night I went to see Janeane Garofalo at Bottletree in downtown Birmingham. Earlier in the day, I sent over a small arrangement to welcome her to the "Magic City". Later that night, she had a great show and everyone enjoyed a night on the town!

Saturday 5:30pm

Equality Alabama held its annual Gala at the Cahaba Grand. Hothouse was responsible for creating the eye-catching entry piece. I think that the show stopper speaks for itself - and yes, those cylinders were filled with water - and yes, very, very heavy! I was honored to be a part of such a great event.

Everyone needs a day of rest! I spent most of the day in my loft working on my new website and hanging out with my cocker spaniel, Jasper. Who can resist this face?

SNAPSHOTS IN THE CITY

Whenever you get some of the best wedding industry professionals in the city to come together and create their magic for a photo shoot - you know the outcome will be exceptional! The latest photo shoot I participated in showed two different sides of the city!

With Christopher (Confero Productions) behind the scenes pulling all of us together, Diane (Olexa's) cooking up the food & cakes and Arden (Arden Photography) capturing the moment from behind the lens, it made my job the most enjoyable!

Our afternoon began at Jones Valley Urban Farms located in the heart of downtown Birmingham. We nestled our farm table in the middle of the field and began to add our layers of tablescape.

Wooden boxes were filled with white snowball hydrangea and accented with deer antlers and strategically placed fresh picked okra.

Diane made a beautiful presentation of an heirloom tomato salad and fresh squeezed lime and sweet tea - Southern favorites!

The bridal bouquet reinforced the theme of deer antlers and gave an in depth examination of textural contrast.

Growing up in the country, Christopher and I were used to a little physical labor on a farm. We look so natural tossing the hay around - who knew we still had the touch!

Our second shoot was located in a loft on 2nd Avenue North in downtown Birmingham. With a beautiful city scene backdrop and a sleek glass table as the foundation we were able to capture some fabulous shots. I designed the tablescape incorporating aquamarine taper candles and several glass cubes with feather spheres perched on the edge. Phal orchids were definitely the flower selection of the evening and incorporated into all of the designs for this shoot.

The bouquet was a moss swirl with accents of sunflowers and orchids. Christopher posed for our bout shot to add a little masculine backdrop.

We all had fun and created some beautiful atmospheres! Be sure to keep an eye out for some of these images - you never know where they might be featured! Special thanks to Arden for sharing her professional shots!

MEET THE NEW "HAPPY" COUPLE!

It is always so much fun when someone in our wedding industry decides to tie the knot themselves! Anyone who has ever met Bill Bouloukos, owner of Happy Catering, knows that he always puts a smile on your face and leaves you in a "Happy" mood. Bill and Lisa tied the knot last Sunday at Matt Jones Gallery. There was no detail left undone and no guests left hungry, for sure!

I always love when the couple gives me a color scheme and let me "do my thing." Lisa is a bright and blingy kind of bride. She carried an elegant design of calla lilies, green cymbidium orchids and the perfect complement of bling adorned the bouquet. It was long and elegant - perfect to mirror Lisa's beauty!

Our color scheme was green, orange sherbert and hot, hot pink. Florals were chosen to compliment the beautiful shantung table linens and to add color and line to accent the Gallery.

The wedding was set in the middle of the round in the center of the Gallery. The couple said I do in front of a draped panel providing the backdrop for the 15 foot urn and pedestal. Drama was created by suspending glass chandelier dangles from the round and bringing the focal in the middle of the room to a candelier - a ring of candles adorned with glass dangles. The mood was that of love and the room was aglow.

The fruitwood chairs were accented with loden shantung ties and accented with a green cymbidium orchid. Sometimes it is that finishing touch that makes guests feel special!

Guests also enjoyed watching Bill break the plates! Oh, how I love a Greek wedding!

Table centres were alternating designs of white calla lilies supporting glass chandelier dangles suspended into glass cylinders and the other design was a luscious floral ring with elegant taper candles and tall floral sphere focals.

The cake was accented with Voodoo roses and sat upon a designer cake plateau made of moss seed disc and rose bowls with floating Voodoo rose heads. The orange added that perfect "pop" and personality that represented the couple perfectly.

I had a blast getting to know Lisa and I it is always an adventure when Bill is around! I mean, even on the invitation was a drawing of them - whimsical and fun to the fullest extent!

3 GIRLS - 3 DAYS - 3 STATES

Every few months I get the need for speed. The need to speed out of town in search of a new adventure. This past weekend, my friends and I set out to explore a new city - Memphis. Why there you ask? Well, I had only been when I was in my younger years and had my Graceland tour then. This trip was through adult eyes and well, I wanted to go somewhere with just enough driving time to get in all the new radio hits...and so, down I-22 we traveled.

Upon arrival in Memphis, I made a surprise visit to my friend Kevin Coble's beautiful floral shoppe. The minute I put my Jeep in park, I knew I was at the right place. The outside is so inviting and lures every onlooker inside the large wooden doors. Kevin was working that day and as we chatted about our lives, our floral duties, and how crazy I was for making Memphis my destination, my eyes wandered throughout the shoppe where fall is in full display. Everything from the fresh flowers to the unique containers and candles -and of course Kevin - are what keep everyone coming back! I enjoyed my chat with Kevin and Aisha - the circle of floral friends is nice to be a part of!

If you know anything about The Peabody - it is the story of the ducks. At 11 am they march down a red carpet and nestle themselves into the pond in the middle of the lobby and well, at 5, they march back down the red carpet, into the elevator and up to the Penthouse where they reside. These are the 5 luckiest ducks in the world! Of course the mascot of The Peabody is everywhere - from the mini soap in the restroom to the handle of the Duckmaster's cane - yes, I said "Duckmaster!" Oh, how tradition is still alive in the South!

Beale Street is a stop for every out of town guest and well, of course the heart of what is happening in downtown Memphis. This street is blocked off and lined with beer and bbq. I spent most of my drinking dollars in Coyote Ugly. Remember this bar from the popular movie? Yes, the cowboy boots dance on the bar and well, Lee Ann Rimes was still playing on the jukebox. We spent most of our Friday night here...

Saturday was all about Blues and BBQ. We started off by touring the Gibson Guitar factory. It is amazing how much work goes into every guitar. It takes almost 3 weeks from start to finish of one guitar and at least 12 layers of lacquer! I don't know how to play a guitar, but I left with an appreciation of this piece of art! PS-can you tell my favorite was the Les Paul Blue.

Of course, after a morning of touring it was time for BBQ. The locals recommend only one place - this one - which is located down a back alley and in the basement of a large building. They have a great rib rub and well, of course great sweet tea!

Saturday night it was 3 Girls Down in Mississippi and Up to No Good...as you can tell, I love this Sugarland song and well, I was a living example. We headed to Tunica (only 30 minute drive) and found ourselves playing some slots. Of course, we had to save enough money to buy a buffet meal and gas back to The Peabody. I didn't hit the Wheel of Fortune jackpot or the Millionaire's Pot, but I know I didn't leave without trying!

Sunday morning was the infamous Peabody Sunday Brunch, well equipped with no other than Duck Pancakes. Only for the kids? Oh No, for the kids at heart too! This is mine before they were swimming in plate of syrup!

Sunday afternoon before departing back home, we stopped by the Memphis Cotton Exchange. Who knew that cotton was so widely grown and used? From fishnets to coffee filters, cotton is everywhere! I couldn't pass up holding a bit and well, being inspired - I am sure there will be some cotton in a few arrangements soon! (You never know what surprise element I will use!)

At last, you can't visit Memphis without bringing back a little of "The King."

GIMME SOME SUGAR - A SOUTHERN SATURDAY WEDDING

You know you are in the South when the flower girl is blowing you kisses and giving you "sugar." That is what I love about my profession. I am always working with people and I realize how friendly we are here in the South, especially on a special occasion! Today was the coming of a highly anticipated wedding for Craig & Misty Mareno - I can say that now ;) After our first meeting I knew that these two would be make a beautiful couple and work hard to have a beautiful wedding. They said "I do's" in thequaint church and then enjoyed

friends and family during their chocolate and green reception with a grapevine sphere centerpiece.

One of my favorite things from the wedding was the beautiful dresses.

I love, love, love these! The day was filled with calla lilies, green cymbidium orchids, candles, coffee beans and candy! I can't forget the candy table, or the ALOHA table preparing them for their Hawaii Honeymoon! My blessings to you both and thank you for allowing me to be a part of your memorable day.

Oh! and I couldn't help but try to get in your get-away car! I loved it! Who said my job isn't fun?!?

ALABAMA WEDDINGS - 2010 SIGNATURE STYLE SERIES

I always enjoy the days I spend on location with my friends in the wedding industry. There is nothing like a photo shoot to get to know each other, stop and savor each other's craft, and simply realize that what we do can truly be only one piece of the puzzle that creates a beautiful event.

My personal HotHouse Signature Style series was shot at Sloss Furnace back in May. Tera and Wes, Armosa Studios, were on hand all day in the sun to capture moment after moment. I haven't seen the professional shots from this couple, but I have no doubt in my mind that they will blow my mind! I fell in love with her photography from the first time I saw it. After meeting for my headshots, I decided I would invite her to capture my work and concept at Sloss...INDUSTRIAL COUTURE at it's finest. My personal style.....I am so excited to see her view.

I also had the opportunity to be the floral decor for Christopher Reed, Confero Productions, shoot as well. Sometimes I sit back and look how different florals can transform settings and stir up completely different emotions. The setting was Workplay and the playmates were Mark Broadway (photographer), Bill and Alisa (Sun Dolphin Productions), Diane (Olexa's Cakes and Catering, Alex (AG Lighting), Heidi (Heidi Elnora), Loraine (Workplay) and of course, the concept creator Christopher (Confero Productions).

"Retro-Pretty in Pink" was an amazing shoot with amazing talent!

If you have ever been around wedding professionals, you know we are so much fun and have our own party in the back. After drooling all day over Diane Olexa's cake, we all completely gave in and dove face first into a mouthful of icing.

It was captured of course by every iphone in the room and well, I am sure Michelle will use this as one of the cover shots! Ha! (Thanks Diane for being such a good sport, you know we love your icing and we love you!) Captured - Christopher, Diane, Michelle and Mandy. Every year I look forward to the opportunity to meet hundreds of engaged women searching for ideas about one of the most important days of their lives. For these women, there is no place like the Perfect Wedding Guide show at SOHO to see it all! I take the time to shake hands and introduce a bit of Hothouse style. This year the show revolved around "F" words - "Fresh, Fabulous, Fantasy, Flirty" and of course, you know I was given "Funky" - imagine that! My Funky room was full of friends and colleagues in the wedding industry and of course my color scheme was Tiffany blue and White with hues of purple florals.

The main floral focal of the room was a circular chandelier adorned with Cool Water lavender rose spheres. The chandelier was hung in the center of a structure that sparkled with chandelier dangles and crisp white ribbon.

It was a contemporary twist on the traditional centerpiece. All of the vendor tables were draped with BBJ's crisp white lamour linens accented with Tiffany Blue runners and a glass cube supporting a 24" Tiffany blue taper candle.

My booth showed a bit more of my "Funky" side. Atop the turquoise pintuck linen was my eco- friendly arrangement. Small blooms were displayed inside water vials to create a captivating piece that caught everyone's eye.

In the background brides to be could choose their favorite door and bouquet option "No. 1, No.2, or No.3" ...after all the ballots were counted, door No. 2 was the winner!!!!

All brides that stopped and visited the booth were given a "door prize!" Thanks for all the brides that have been calling and compliments that keep coming. I enjoyed every minute of it and I look forward to shaking hands again soon!

COOL FLOWERS AND COOL FAVOR

I enjoyed Allison from the first time that she sat down with me to discuss all of her floral details. She said, "nothing should be ordinary" and on her wedding day, nothing was ordinary. From the beautiful German inspired bridal bouquet to the finishing touches adorning Matt Jones Gallery, Allison's style was evident. Her bouquet was one of my favorites I have made in a while - I love that something as simple as craspedia and feverfew can make such an impact! Here are a few of the shots we captured to show you - I am ready to see some of Jerrod Brown's professional angles. Enjoy!

The front doors of Matt Jones were accented with Moss Garland Curls and fresh Mini Cymbidium Orchids. Such a distinctive statement to welcome everyone to a stylish party!

One of my favorite things of her wedding was the favor! They "Gave Water" which was essentially a small bottle of water to take home, but the water didn't stop there. They made a donation to dig three wells in Africa to supply fresh water for people there. It is always nice to see some fresh ideas - I love this one!!

Southern Summer Soiree in the City

During my drive home, there is always one element of decor that sticks out about a wedding. It could have been the bouquets, the pool floater, the sign in arrangement or the large food centerpiece, but today it was by far the incorporation of fruits and vegetables into my floral table centres.

Amanda, my bride, expressed her love of the very unusual pin cushion protea. I knew I would incorporate this unique, tropical bloom into as much of the decor as possible.

A Southern Summer Soiree was the appropriate setting to incorporate the luscious, ripe and ready to eat Alabama home grown tomato. My idea was to have the tomatoes, oranges and apples alternating into the large glass cylinders and introducing at every turn a pin cushion protea adding the new element of texture under the glass. After a willow ring of mango mini callas and green cymbidium orchids adorned the top of the glass, the trio blend of orange hues was brought to life. Believe me, there is nothing more tempting than a luscious tomato in the middle of July heat!

Mango Mini Callas and Pin Cushion Proteas were definitely the flowers of choice for the bride. Everything from the groomsmen bouts to the bistro accents pulled the colors and flowers into the overall summer scheme.

Not only did the centerpieces get photographed, but we couldn't resist playing around in the cool summer sun! Here are a few fun shots!

They thought that this was so funny! Don't they know I can't write the paychecks from in here?!?

This is one of my favorite pictures of Beth! We all enjoy what we do for a living and it makes every minute worth it!

MIDSUMMER NIGHT AT ALDRIDGE GARDENS

Any Birmingham bride having an outdoor wedding today was truly one of the luckiest girls in the land. I considered myself to be even luckier since I had to be outside designing...but designing in mid 70's temp with a constant breeze - are we really in Alabama in mid-July?

It was by far a perfect setting for Jonas & Molly to be married under the blooming arbor in the middle of the always perfected Aldridge Gardens. Surrounded by blooming hydrangeas and family and friends they were married under the arch with a beautiful reception following inside.

Molly's bouquet was a hand-tied mixture of thick texture and saturated shades of purple. Your eye was drawn to the deep purple hydrangea, dahlias, lisianthus, cool water roses and always intriguing scabiosa.

Jonas had a complementary bout of scabiosa and green kermits.

Inside the reception guests were treated to beautiful table centres of antique green hydrangea mixed with candlelight. The mantle was a special feature with pillar candles, mosses and clusters of purple accent florals. Jan Moon, owner of Dreamcakes, made a delicious three tier cake that was decorated in the purple and green scheme. I always love to taste the icing...it takes me back to my childhood - the days when my Grandmother would take me shopping and get me that sweet treat.

I enjoyed so much working with Molly, a long distance relationship, but we were able to make sure that every detail was definite and brought to life today! Happy Honeymooning!

HANDS AT WORK AT CREATIVE CANDLES

KANSAS CITY - AIFD - BLOG 2

A special treat as part of my Kansas City adventure, I received an invitation to attend a behind the scenes tour of the Creative Candle Company. I mean, we as event florists have all used candles, but many of us have never actually seen the process that a 36 inch taper goes through or the immaculate detail of getting that perfectly smooth finish of a pillar candle.

I think in this scenario that pictures can say a thousand words....So enjoy!

Oh and these are my girls, Pat & Lakecia! They make sure my candles are packaged and perfect!

Creative Candles come in over 100 colors! The beauty is that they are solid color through to the core. And, oh the sizes - who wouldn't love a 39 inch taper candle - or taller - tailor made! Of course, that is where Martha gets it! ...and Bloomingdales...and Pottery Barn...and Hothouse!

I am going to begin stocking a few of the unusual sizes in the store! One fun thing as well are the celebration candles! These are the really skinny, tall ones - like on birthday cakes and at specialty parties!

Creative Candles have graced the tables of the White House, Lincoln Center, the Waldorf-Astoria and countless other celebrity weddings and events!

This is a top quality company, with a top quality staff and most importantly a top quality product.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the workshop watching and listening - it is amazing to see the process from the beginning wax chunks to the finished product in a tablescape setting. I can't wait until I can use them this weekend!

KANSAS CITY IS FOR KIDS..KIDS AT HEART!

KANSAS CITY - AIFD 2009 - BLOG BEGINS...

Every July I travel near and far to attend AIFD's National Symposium. This year it brought me to explore Kansas City. I must admit, I was a bit unsure of what the streets had in store. During the day I sit, listen and learn from some of the most talented floral designers in the world and at night, I get to let explore a new city.

So, my first day here gave me a few hours of daylight to walk the streets. Upon my surprise, I unleashed the inner child when I found myself sitting at a table at the CRAYOLA CAFE. Of course, all creatives like myself consume themselves with colors on a daily basis, whether it be a crayon, a paint chip at Home Depot or simply the color of our underwear. (THIS WAS MY COLOR OF THE DAY...my shirt of course!)

We all have our favorites and I remember loving the names of crayons. Growing up I always thought that my mother was the best colorer. She is definitely the one that taught the kid in me to color in the lines and then now she encourages me to stretch my lines and define my own boundaries. Perhaps if I wasn't a floral designer I could be one of those people who sits around observing everyday life to search high and low for the names of all the colors..hmm...

CAKE AND CHEERS ABOVE THE REDMONT

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAY! The rooftop bar, ABOVE, was the perfect setting for my friend, Jay Barrett's Birthday Bash. Christopher Reed, Confero Production's mastermind, created a hip and hot setting for all the partygoers to enjoy.

The night was set with bistro arrangements of half moon glass filled with turquoise water spheres accented with cream spray rose balls.

The main bar focal was a cylinder filled with turquoise spheres accented with a large glass sphere filled with water and floating candles. Dendrobium orchid blooms were suspended from the metal grid of the arrangement to add that element of surprise. No detail was left unnoticed and everyone partied in honor of Jay and Equality Alabama. I mean, it's not a Birthday Bash without an appearance from Marilyn, Cheers from the crowd and a Cake for dessert! Thanks for asking me to be a special part of your night! I loved every minute of it - great friends and good times!

A NIGHT AT THE THEATRE AND A PERSONAL PLAYBILL

A night at the Alabama Theatre and a personal wedding playbill is exactly what the guests of tonight's wedding received. After walking up to the infamous Alabama in lights, guests were greeted by the beautiful cake creation of Diane Olexa of Olexa's Cakes & Catering. She had a lavish display of food that was nestled underneath Hothouse's beautiful iron candelabra displaying over a dozen 2' taper candles and red rose balls.

The Alabama is a landmark here in Birmingham and I get so excited whenever I walk in it! When I was in college, my interiors class took a tour of all the levels of the Theatre and discussed the decor in extensive detail. I remember being awed at exactly how many lightbulbs are used throughout the Theatre - not to mention just the ones on the side street sign! Tonight the Theatre was at its best with all the lights glowing and the essence of love in the air!

The bride carried a bouquet of two dozen Freedom red roses, accented with "bling" and finished off with a rhinestone decorative bracelet. The bridesmaids carried handtieds of white calla lilies and red roses, accented with a pearl decorative bracelet.

The Theatre truly is a wow factor facility that you don't remotely try to compete with - by far the Alabama is one of my favorite event facilities! If you haven't been in a while go down and catch a summer movie!

WALKING IN MY SHOPPING SHOES...

I thought an interesting blog would be to give you a little insight on what it's like to Walk in my Shopping Shoes....Today for instance - from the moment I heard my alarm to the minute I am

sitting here sharing with you!

5:15 am - Woke up alarm clock ringing

6:00am - Showered and walking the dog, feeding the dog, walking the dog again...

6:30am - Floral wholesale for last minute selection of fresh florals for orders to be filled today

7:00 am - On the Road to "Hotlanta" for Market

7:00-9:00am - A little Sugarland, a little Chick-fil-A, a little Beyonce (Single Ladies)

9:30-4:30pm - Market shopping - 3 Buildings, visited over 50 Showrooms & took note of trends

5:00pm - My routine of sitting down to enjoy Mama Ninfa's Mexican food after a long, long day of decisions, purchases, and planning for my retail market - Enjoyed some tamales & chips!

6:15pm - On the Road to IKEA! I mean, I can't go to Atlanta and not go to IKEA! Again, 2 Floors, and thousands of items to choose from! More decisions and of course I couldn't return without buying a few gigantic cinnamon rolls for my Hothouse gang for breakfast (maybe they won't notice one is already missing ;)

This would be me in the middle of IKEA taking a well deserved rest....

7:30pm - On the Road back to Birmingham

7:30-9:30pm - A little Trisha Yearwood, a little Starbucks Mocha Frappy Happy, a little Popular from Wicked, the musical...

9:45pm - Arrive home to walking the dog, feeding the dog, walking the dog again, playing with JasperRoo - part KangaROO for his amazing jumping abilities, part Termite for his wood chewing abilities and well I still remember the day I fell in love with those cocker spaniel ears.

11:00pm - Finally sit down on the tufted sofa to pop open the apple and indulge in everyone else's lives on Facebook and well, do a little talking myself...of course while sipping a cold Sprite and nibbling on an IKEA cinnamon roll- I am definitely an icing girl!

Approx 12:00am - Head to bed just to wake up and see what surprises tomorrow may hold!!

So - after all of that - Is the life a floral studio owner all glamourous? Well, there are those beautiful top notch, top shelf, soirees I get to attend, but all in all there are the days I get to wash flower buckets and pay taxes too... and of course there are days like this one where I feel I am doing the right thing - doing what I love - of course I am talking about Shopping!

GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN!

I love it when I get phone calls requesting something fun, funky, different, pushing the limits of floral design and well - when people let me do what it is I do! It is usually these kind of parties or gatherings that I would love to be invited to! Recently Hothouse did the florals for a LINGERIE PARTY that took place on the roof of the Redmont Hotel in downtown Birmingham.

I used hot pink glassware with floating candles that were accented with black crystal dangles and anchored with clusters of pink spray roses and black feathers. The main bar focal was a feminine, curvy mannequin torso that was adorned with black crystal dangles, flax leaves, roses, and orchids.

We all know GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN and believe me, I did with this party! Thanks for letting me be creative! I love it!

A CONTEMPORARY CONCEPT

Planning a wedding can be like building a house - there are so many decisions to make! Every bride needs a great wedding planner. When I first met Kacie Riley

she had already hired Alene to assist her with deciding even the smallest of details. After meeting with these ladies, we came up with an overall look that would complement everything Kacie had envisioned for her wedding day. Her color scheme of ivory and green allowed us to keep everything so fresh and clean. Ross Bridge was a beautiful backdrop for her ceremony and allowed us to create a candlelight evening inside for her reception. All of the details were covered from the coordination of the bistro candles to the gobo with the couples name. I enjoyed creating the collection centerpieces and watching everything fall into place. One of the most stunning decor elements was the crisp, modern focal of the room. Thanks for letting me be a part of your wedding!

PRETTY IN PINK - HOUCK/WELLS WEDDING

I knew from the moment I met Katie that this was going to be a beautiful wedding! Our adventure began with a Rehearsal dinner at Park Lane - where it truly was a candlelight dinner! - the lights went out due to windy weather. The next morning rain fell..and fell...and fell...but as the afternoon approached the sun came out and made a beautiful setting for the late afternoon wedding.

Katie's bouquets were designed with luscious and fragrant peonies, hydrangeas, roses and a pop of fern curl. After a high church wedding at Independent Presbyterian her guests arrived to an unforgettable evening at the Matt Jones Gallery. Guests were greeted by 8 foot tall votive trees with hanging chartreuse cymbidium orchids and table decor of 3 1/2 foot metal flowers and low calla lily arrangements. I enjoyed meeting and planning with all the ladies in the Houck-Wells family! You made my job just what I love

A SWEET AFTERNOON TREAT

Of course I love getting to visit with my friends in the wedding industry! After a day of paperwork and planning, it was time to treat myself to a little bit of something sweet. I am talking about Diane and her cake!

For those of you not familiar with her - Diane Olexa is the owner of Olexa's Cakes and Catering located in Mtn. Brook Village. She not only makes some of the most beautiful cakes in Birmingham, but also has a Cafe that is open for lunch!

Upon our arrival, Diane greeted us with a warm slice of her wedding cake (we split the chocolate and vanilla) and topped it off with a sliver of strawberry. If you are ever in Mtn. Brook be sure to plan your visit around lunchtime - the Ultimate Grilled Cheese is my favorite! Thanks Diane for a great afternoon treat - the cake and you! I look forward to next time! Yummy...

Saturday was filled with romantic, fragrant peonies accompanied with white and blue hydrangeas, cymbidium orchids, massive amounts of candlelight and one beautiful bride!

Lauren visited the studio several months ago to sit down and discuss her Monet inspired wedding decor. Lauren was the perfect bride covering everything to even the smallest of details. I enjoyed all of the planning sessions we had and her personal countdown! Lauren and her bridesmaids carried handtied bouquets of white and blue hydrangeas, peonies, vendella roses, yarrow and baby blue scabiosa blooms. After a touching ceremony, Lauren and her new husband arrived at Matt Jones Gallery to an enchanted evening with family and friends.

Diane Olexa presented a beautiful presentation of delicious fruits, cheeses and food. To highlight her food presentation, I created a freestanding display of art frames displaying hand tied bouquets of vendella roses.

The evening was filled with beautiful blooms accompanied by candlelight. The theme of parisian blue and pale yellows were carried out in every detail - just like Lauren dreamed of!
